Who is Rory McIlroy?
Let’s begin by saying that Rory McIlroy held the world’s number one position for 95 weeks of the Official World Golf Ranking. He has won three different majors, making him the first European to do so. Not only did he reach this achievement but he is also, along with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, one of a few to ever achieve this by the age of 25.
Rory was born on May 4th, 1989 in Northern Ireland. He started a successful career as an amateur, coached by his father. He joined Holywood Golf Course at age 7, making him the youngest member. When he was 17, he topped the World Amateur Golf Ranking for one week. Right after this, in 2007, he became a professional at the age of 18.
There are several other records that this great golfer holds. At age 22, he became the youngest player to earn €10 million at the European Tour. In 2011 and in 2014, he was awarded the RTÉ Person of the Year for his achievements. He set several records during the 2011 U.S. Open Championship, including an aggregate score of 268. At this tournament, he became the youngest person to win it since 1923 (championship won by Bobby Jones).
McIlroy has had the privilege of training with several professional golfers who include Graeme McDowell and Nick Faldo. He is, at age 26, considered one the most exciting prospects in golf with the potential to becoming a very high earner from endorsements.
As a citizen of Ireland, he has represented Europe, Great Britain, and Ireland. For the 2016 Olympic Games, he has declared that he will represent Ireland if he qualifies.
With 5 amateur and 18 professional wins, McIlroy is definitively one golfer we will be hearing from in the years to come.
